Edible Minty Snowmen

This holiday activity and recipe is one of my fondest memories around the Christmas season growing up. We found the recipe in a magazine and we would build little snowmen and give them to my grandma. She would present them right in front of her sink on the window sill until they got so stale they fell apart, or until us grandkids ate them.

This was one of my go-to babysitting activities when I was a teenager. Kids of all ages love this activity and parents loved coming home to a little snowmen built by each child.

I am so excited to add this simple activity to my own family’s Christmas traditions. I tried it this week with my little 1.5-year-old and although making a snowman is above her skill level, she had a blast smushing them all together like playdough. The best part about this recipe is it’s completely edible and tastes fantastic. The taste of this dough brings back so many memories!

Obviously the photos of my snowman doesn’t look exactly photogenic but my daughter sure had fun destroying him. My sister did this activity with her kids and I think theirs turned out absolutely adorable! I hope this becomes a fun and easy tradition in your house!

Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Servings 3 snowmen

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp butter softened
  • 1 Tbsp light corn syrup
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • Red, green, blue, yellow and/or purple liquid or gel food coloring
  • Colored sprinkles, candies, etc.

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the butter, corn syrup, extract, and salt. Gardually stir in confectioners' sugar. Knead by hand for 1-2 minutes or until mixture becomes pliable.

  2. Split the dough in half and leave one-half white. Take the rest and split into however many colors you plan on using and add food coloring to each ball.

  3. Use the colored dough to form hats, scarves, earmuffs, etc. Use candies or dough to make eyes, nose, and buttons.

Recipe Notes

There is no need to make the measurements exact. You just need a pliable dough that doesn’t stick to your hands.

After mixing, put them in a Ziploc bag to harden up a bit before using or put them in the refrigerator. If they seem a bit dry or tough, add the tiniest amount of water to your hand and roll it around (a little bit goes a long way!). If they are too soft, keep them in the fridge longer or I just roll it in a bit of powdered sugar to soak more of that moisture. Enjoy this easy holiday activity!
